2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup dry milk
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup unsalted, smooth peanut butter
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 large egg
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon cinnamon
Optional: Dog-friendly icing or carob chips for decoration
Instructions:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, rolled oats, dry milk, and cornmeal. Mix the dry ingredients together thoroughly.
In a separate microwave-safe bowl, warm the peanut butter until it’s easily mixable. Be sure it’s not too hot for your pup.
Add the warmed peanut butter to the dry ingredients, followed by water, applesauce, egg, honey, and cinnamon. Mix well until the ingredients form a dough. If the dough seems too dry, you can add a bit more water.
Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness. You can use fun cookie cutters to cut out shapes, such as bones or stars.
Place the cutouts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each cookie.
Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 12-15 minutes or until the edges are golden brown. Keep an eye on them to prevent over-baking.
Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.
If desired, you can decorate the cookies with dog-friendly icing or carob chips. Make sure any decorations are safe for canine consumption.
Once decorated, let the icing or decorations set before serving the cookies to your furry friend.
Store the dog cookies in an airtight container for freshness. These festive treats make excellent gifts for your own dog or for the dogs of friends and family during the holiday season. Remember to use ingredients that are safe for dogs and consult with your veterinarian if your dog has any specific dietary restrictions or allergies. Enjoy watching your pup delight in these homemade, holiday-themed treats!
